Topic: Advantage Database System

I am currently using the SME Server in my office simply as a domain controller so that my Windows 2000 workstations have a server to log into.  This has allowed me to avoid creating user accounts on each workstation.

My main server is a Netware 5.0 server which functions very well as a file and print server.  However I don't want to add any programs that might "lock" me into the netware server for the future.

One of the software vendors that we use for a time and billing system is upgrading their software.  The new version will be a true client/server application with the Advantage Database System at its heart.  The good news is that one of the supported servers types is Linux.

My question is whether anyone using the SME server is currently using it with any large database programs installed--especially client/server applications.

I want to purchase the Linux server version of this program rather than the Netware version but I don't know whether I will need to create another non-SME Linux server or whether the SME server will do the job.

Well...Does that application support mysql database? I'm using mysql on my private website (http://ipcop.hopto.org) and at work for workflow management. Users are accessing database through web browser as well. Database size is 90-100mb. I had to move it over from MS access few years ago due to the ver slow access time and other problems. Mysql can handle a lot bigger databases than this one

We use on our site een web store whith a database (MySql) standaard on SME about 250 Mb. Also for information stuf we use on the same server a database whit 7.5 mijoen records whitch is big 1.5 Gb. The seachs off records are lower than 2 seconds. Wat kind off seach you made.

So, ask your seller off software for MySql database are ODBC <> MySql.

I suspect Harvey will not have a choice on the database backend. Software developers use the Advantage database because they code to a single .dll for both stand-alone and client/server apps.  The advantage .dll manages the connection to a local file or server request.

Harvey: I have not used the Advantage database in a client/server environment yet. However I am inclined to believe it will work extremely well.  I would be more concerned about support for the backend on Linux - not that there aren't plenty of well intentioned IT people willing to offer free advice on web boards .

Wish you well, and would love to hear your experince if you decide to go the linux route.

You are correct, Jeff.  I have no choice as to the backend.  It will be the Advantage database on both the server side and the client side.  But since Advantage offers the server side on Netware, Windows 2000, and Linux, I wanted to use the LInux version.

I have since spoken to my vendor and while Advantage offers all these, the vendor of my Time & Billing system is only supporting Windows 2000 and Netware (SURPRISE!) at least for now.  Frankly, I just think they no nothing about LInux and are afraid that their HELP desk might be in over their heads.

I will be discussing the matter with them further.
