Hi,

Hope this is the forum place.

I want to setup a test server at home. The problem is that I cannot afford to get a Internet connection with a static IP. And the provider would not give me the login name or help me setup.

So I can I configure sme to get an Ip from the modem? So it can have internet access and run as a gateway..

If I am right, you may be having the following layout:

ISP --- modem ---- Computer (connected via ethernet port on modem)


You can do the following:

Step 1 : Go to your network connections (if you are using xp), double click your active connection (Local Area Connection). Under the support tab, click details (IP address, Subnet, Default Gateway, DNS Server, WINS) and note down the listed information on a piece of paper...

Step 2 : Remove the ethernet wire connected to your computer.

Step 3 : Boot your SME Server with the ethernet wire from the modem now connected to SME's external interface (your preference) (should have two adapters to work as a gateway) and login as admin...

Step 4: Select configure this server..(Configure as gateway)

Step 5 : When you reach the page where it asks for External Interface configuration, select static IP and hit enter

Step 6 : For IP address, enter the address you noted down on paper.

Step 7:Enter the subnet Mask for Netmask

Step 8: For gateway IP, enter the Default gateway IP you noted down...

Step 9: You can enable DHCP on the local lan ie your local interface... to which your computer will now be connected

Step 10: Just keep on hitting next, till it asks you to reboot...

You are done! Hope this helps...

I think you need to take a look at the following:

At Step 5 above in the previous post, I think you need to configure external interface to use DHCP, and not a static address, probably Item 1, unless you are using a Dynamic DNS service.

Still trying to get the isp to give me the username and password. Is there another way?

I don't understand why you need a username and password?  When you connect a ms win box do you need a user name and password?  If not you should not need one for the sme box.  I haven't set up a SME 7.x box using DHCP, but on my old SME 6 server I did use DHCP for some time and did not need a username or password.

What is the ip address when you connect the windows box  (See step 1 of ronaldson40 post)?  Is the number 192.168.xxx.xxx or 10.0.xxx.xxx?  If so, the modem is providing the ip address for your internal network.  If the modem is providing the address you should be able to use the 192.168.xxx.xxx or 10.0.xxx.xxx ip address that you get from the ms win box as a STATIC ip address for the SME server as described by ronaldson40's post.  In this case, the modem's external address will be different and you should be able to get that by going to whatismyip.com.  The address from whatismyip.com would be the one to use to get to your server when you are outside of your network.  Of coarse your ISP my block or limit some of the services that your sme server is able to provide, i.e., you may not be able to use the sme server as an email server as you ISP may block port 25.

my current problem is I have to unplug the from the server and place it to a windows box every morning to get a new IP.

If your ISP is providing you with a dynamic IP address, the ISP will configure this through DHCP or PPPoE and your server will be re-configured automatically whenever your IP address changes. If you plan to use a Dynamic DNS service, select Option 2. Otherwise, select Option 1.

I have never used dynamic IP addresses and cannot test as none of my servers are server/gateway with two nics. It sounds like mazkot is using the direction from the first post instead of actually setting up his SME to obtain an IP from the ISP's DHCP server. Apparently his ISP is expiring the IP lease every 24hrs and actually reassigning a different IP address (this is quite unusual behavior).

My question is,
Which option would be used to obtain a Dynamic IP address via DHCP like the windows workstation. (no Dynamic DNS service used and not Account name and password needed)

Is your server setup in server/gateway mode or server only mode ?

If you have a mdoem/router that is already serving as your login client and establishing a connection with your ISP account, then your server should be in gateway mode, and you forward port 80 (and any others required) to your sme server.

What is your network arrangement ?

ISP MODEM-> Give dynamic IP

SME server  2 nic installed
 |
2 xp workstations

1 nic set for 192.168.1.x IP for local
2 connected to the modem

Is your modem configured as the login client for your Internet connection ?

In the arrangement you show, your modem should be in bridged mode (ie passes all signals straight through to your sme server) and the sme server functions as login client (& gateway etc).
Is your modem in bridged mode ?

I have no access to the configuration of the modem.
My internet connection is a home use plan were the ISp just gives you a modem pre-configured.

I'm assuming you do need to change the configuration of your modem if you want to use sme server in gateway server mode. As you say you cannot do that, so the only option then is to configure your sme server in server only mode, and then port forward ports from the modem to your server, the problem with that is you have to configure your modem (which you cannot or do not know how to do).

I suggest then that you ask your ISP for configuration details for your modem and if they don't provide them, then cancel the account and go elsewhere with your business.

Can you tell us the first two parts of the IP that you are assigning to your Wan nic? We do not need the whole IP address. That will tell us if your address is publicly routed. I think mary is getting a little off the original problem here as the question is not "How do I get internet access to my webserver?" it is "How do I get my SME server WAN connection to obtain an IP address from a DHCP server?"
