SME Setup
« on: July 19, 2008, 12:43:28 PM »
Ok not sure which setup to use, can someone help me out

this is the setup I want to use since I have IP phone with internet supplier.

I also have a static IP, and the SME Server has 2 NICS

                    |<----> Xbox 360, PS2
                    |
Internet---->Router<----->Mediatrix(this is for IP phone)<---->Telephones
                    |
                    |<--> SME Server<-----> switch<----> computers (8 of them)
                                                           |
                                                           |<---> wireless router <---> laptop

The server is to host web page, VPN, store music/video and file sharing etc

The breakdown of what some computer are going to be used as:

1 ---> Server
1 ---> storing music/videos
1 ---> files, will be used for torrents, transfer of files
2 ---> lan games

Not sure if I should setup web pages on server or use a completly different computer?

Thanks for all inputs

If possible I would also place my XBox behind SME Server, I am not sure if your router has a firewall, if not above setup will leave you XBox vulnerable to the web, behind the SME Server it would be better protected.

In the drawing you made here, you would need server-gateway as your design indicates two NIC's.

The drawing Drdwithaphd made is contradictory.
If your sme server is behind a router (router here being modem/gateway-firewall/login client/DHCP server etc), then your sme server would be in server only mode, and you would forward any ports eg port 80 to the sme server to provide web sites for external users.
Your drawing would also need to change as there is only one NIC in server only mode, to something like this.

Internet---->Router<----->Mediatrix(this is for IP phone)<---->Telephones
                    |
                  switch
                    |<----> computers (8 of them)
                    |<--> SME Server
                    |<---> wireless router <---> laptop
                    |<----> Xbox 360, PS2
Please search before asking, an answer may already exist.

I use a variant of mary's diagram:

Internet---->Router<----->Mediatrix(this is for IP phone)<---->Telephones
                    |
         SME Server & Gateway
                    |
                switch
                    |<----> computers (8 of them)
                    |<---> wireless router <---> laptop
                    |<----> Xbox 360, PS2

I don't have an xbox or ps2, but I do give quests access via the wireless access point once I am convinced their device isn't a malevolent berserker bot.
