Software for providing a Geocities-like community

Just out of interest I stumbled across http://prowebpages.com/, which provides a software package called AllManager. It's a bunch of scripts that provide a Geocities like community, where people can register for an account that will give them their own private website on your server. Then, registered users can upload files (non cgi as far as I can work out), e.g. html, jpg etc, or they can edit html files online.

The scripts provide automatic user registration, so you set configuration options and leave everything running, with minimal maintenance. You can configure things like the amount of disk space users get.

It's pretty good. They have 2 free versions, one with file upload, one without, and a non-free version which uses MySql (when they write it). I haven't fully explored the license, cos I saw the word free, and.. well I just assumed.......

Take a look at my site:

http://www.stodge.net/pages/register.html

When you click register, you'll get a "contains no data error". I'm working on that, but it doesn't matter, as the registration works. Then go to:

http://www.stodge.net/pages/cgi-bin/allmanage.pl

and log in with the user you created to manage your site.

Then go to:

http://www.stodge.net/pages/members/

to see your site.

Post comments if you install it or try it, as I'm impressed by it.

I'd prefer if it had email integration, like if it created a physical user on the linux box, rather than a pseudo user, but I'm still impressed.

Enjoy!

cheers
Mike

Yep it does. If my memory serves me well, then its just a bunch of perl scripts. These can be run on any (I think) web server, e.g. Apache, which the E-Smith server uses.

Does that mean that you actually have tested it on E-Smith?
Have you also tried to make a "backup" and "restore" (in E-Smith) and verified this software afterwards?

I have tested this software. If you see my original posts, I gave several links to this software running on my server. My server is running E-Smith 3.1. Hence the software does work on E-Smith. The software that we're discussing here is just a bunch of perl scripts, and will work on any (correct me if Im wrong) web server that allows you to run cgi scripts (such as Perl). This includes Apache, which is installed as part of the E-Smith product.

I haven't tried the backup or restore commands. I don't use them, so I don't know what they do.
