New install hung in install software?
« on: April 01, 2009, 12:20:24 AM »
per bug 5124:

It has been 2.5 hours since I started the Software Install from the server-manager interface on the console via Lynx browser.  I have tried to do this install by the books.

yum itself has long since finished running, I can <cntl-alt-F2> and log in as root and run 'yum check-updates' and it comes back nothing to install.

But the software install panel is showing yum running.  If I press enter on the refresh URL I get taken back to the install software which just cycles me back to yum running...

So is the install broken and I better just do a clean install and this time run yum update logged in as root?

Is the server-manager broken and I just do a reboot?

Next install WILL have the first software update done from root with yum update so I can see what is happening.

Did you clear the cache in lynx? It just may appear that it is still running because you are viewing a cached page.

How do you clear the cache in lynx?  Given that you probably should not leave the software install until the software is installed, this might be a problem....

I did look into /var/log/yum/yum.log.1238529039 and this clearly shows that yum update was successful.  But I don't know the follow-on commands, and how to tell if they executed.

Of course one is to reboot the system, so it is only one command.  And I have not found it in the wiki yet.  Kind of like when your teacher tells you to look up a word in the dictionary to find out how to spell it....

Could not clear out the cache because the cached pages were in use.

So I had to exit from lynx and went back in.  Then it gave me the reconfigure button, rebooted twice, and now I seem to be in business.

So this appears to be a usage problem if you do the update from the console via server-manager.

Well, learned something.  Next time it will be plain old yum update as root.

Or from a browser in your local domain?

NO.

Because there is no progress reporting (bug 5124).

There are too many packages to update.  Granted right now it is just 78Mb (61 updates 9 installs), which is NOTHING compared to a FC9 install that then has to upgrade to FC9.5...

But then I am one of those that does an <alt-D> and watches the boot information scroll across the screen.
