Should I use SME Server ?
« on: June 04, 2002, 06:28:10 AM »
I plan to install a SME Server (proxy and firewall) in a small compagnie using a Win 2K server (PDC) and Lotus Domino under Win NT4 as mail server (For the moment, we have to keep this servers). They will have an ADSL connexion sooner and they want to share this Internet access and to protect it.
My questions are : 1/ will I have to manage 2 list of username (one on the Win2K Svr and one on the SME Server)  ? 2/ Could we define rules for each user or group to precise when they are able to acess the Internet (for exampel, this group of users in not allowed to use internet, this one can use it during office hours ...).

Thanks a lot

Yes. But for a start you will be fine without specific users. Let your w2k and domino handle mail and file-sharing an sme will do internet access.

Then you might want to upgrade to sme fully. You need users, when you want to use filesharing and mail. It is very easy to add users to sme. No problem with less than 50 users.

This can be done. Squid proxy, that manages internet access with sme, has the option of time and person/user rules.

But these options are not implemented in sme, so you would have to do this by "hand".

Have Fun.

Hello benja,

Yes, you can use SME for what you wnat to use setup you network als follow

    Internet
        |
ADSL modem
        |
SME Server  (two nic's)
        |
Win2k proxy (two nic's)
        |
Hub / Switch To your internal network

Answere 1
No you only use the win2k user system

Answere 2
On the Win2k box you define rulles who can use the internet (proxy/ISA server)

On this way you have a relative save network connections with a two/three steps off security.

Good luck
