I can backup to workstation now !!!! with following setting:

Backup is Enabled.
Backup is made on LAN workstation 10.0.0.200 via cifs
Destination backup share folder is haha
Login is test
Password is ********
Number of rotating backup sets is 2
Number of daily backups contained in each set is 7
Compression level (0-9) of backup is 0
Daily backup occurs at 19:29
Each daily backup session is cleanly timed out after 10 hours.except full backups which are cleanly timed out after 24 hours
Full backup session (new backup sets) is allowed only on Friday

leiw,

Can you tell us what changed (other then compression level)?

You do have files on the workstation share?

I would recommend deleting some (unimportant) files from the server and doing a test SELECTIVE restore. (Do not do the full restore or you will probably be reinstalling the sever)

One reason why it may not run the backup is that you allow full backup only on Friday. What happens if it is not Friday and you have not full backup to increment against??...........

SME should do nothing and wait for the next friday scheduled backup to make full backup.

Hello

1. I only changed the compression level to 0 and Number of rotating backup sets is 2
and Number of daily backups contained in each set is 7.

2. Yes, in \\ip_share\share\testing.test.com\set0\full-201001081929.1.dar <---- 531mb.

3. This backup is not an incremental backup, how to use Workstation selective file restore?

4. Is it no incremental backup? only have full backup? if it has incremental how can I do what I want?
I also I want to know it can replace pervious backup?

Thanks !!

Leiw,

1. With your current setting you will have the first full backup on the first run (this is the full backup for set0). For the next 6 days you will only backup the changes from the day before. This allows you to restore a file to what it was on any day in the backup set. On the 7th day it will create a Second full backup (set1) and repeat the process of backing up changes for the next 6 days. After two weeks you can restore a file to any time in the last two weeks. On the 14th day the first set (in your case set0) will be overwritten with a new full backup.

3. Move a file from one of your ibays into another location (you can do this from a windows share if you wish). On the first screen of the backup panel where you select the kind of backup you want, the last option is "selective file restore from workstation". If you select this option you will be given a list of backup sets. Once you choose a set, all files on that set will be shown, you can then select the file that you moved and restore it to it's former location. You can then go check it with your workstation and make sure it is what you wanted, thus testing that your backup is working correctly.

4. See item 1

One problem with only allowing full backup on one day of the week is that if for some reason backup does not run on that day, it will increment for another week. This gives 1 full backup with 13 increments against it. If one of these is corrupt, it will probably break the whole set.

2 sets with 7 days in each set is a nice balance of safety in my opinion. The safest way to achieve the same level of versioning of files would be 14 full backups. For most of us the storage requirements for this are unmanageable.

1. Thank for your detailed answers!

3. ok, I will try this later, if I have 1 full backup and 6 increnemtal backup and then select All backups option, is it help me to arrange in order from those backups?

4. I think can active this solutioin is more space in storage side :)

P.S. I will try to restore file as your mentioned method then reinstall this testing server then try to backup to workstation again.

Thank you very much !!!!!!

Hello mercyh

1. I'm testing restore from fresh installation. After installled smeserver 7.4, I goto backup and restore option to config configuration workstation backup to my backup location, and then select selective restore but it displayed "No directory for your host in shared folder. Maybe your host name is different from backup ones", I'am sure the configuration is correctly.

2. I saw freah restore option when I installing smeserver 7.4, but it have to use CD for restore.
I have a question is I have 1 full backup and 1 incremental backup, can this option restore those
backup files?

Thanks !

Backups are stored on the workstation share in a specific directory for each backuped server. Unless you have made a first backup with your server, this directory is not created and the message from the server-manager is correct.

I just tested something, please see below:

1. Whe I set "Full backup is allowed on" Everyday or this day (for example: Sunday), it successfully backup a full backup to workstation and stored the full backup in set0 folder.

2. When I set "Full backup is allowed on" Monday (Monday not this day), it cannot successfully backup a full backup to workstation. (I think it will backup a incremental backup to workstation)

3. Also tested restore from workstation, after restore, I can't use SSH to remote this server, I goto remote access option to check whether somethings not enable, but saw all enabled, so pressed Save button that I can use SSH ! and then I tried https://ip_address/server-manager that I can't login ... why?

Thanks !

Using https://ip_address/server-manager and using SSh are two completely different things

When I set "Full backup is allowed on" Monday (Monday not this day), it cannot successfully backup a full backup to workstation.

Please THINK of the logic. You chose a setting which only allows full backups to happen on Monday, which means it will NOT  do a full backup on any other day.
Please read the documentation more thoroughly as I'm sure there are usage tips published, see http://wiki.contribs.org/Backup_with_dar

https://ip_address/server-manager that I can't login ... why?

Is that Lan IP or WAN IP ?
LAN IP should work, but WAN IP will not unless you have added the remote host IP address that you are accessing from, into the Remote Management panel.
Please take the time to read the documentation more thoroughly.

definition:

full backup> a complete backup of all files marked to be backed up

Incremental backup> A backup of files that have changed since the last backup.

How can you do an incremental backup without first doing a full backup?
