Nothing to be sorry about that I can see 8-)

A lot of advise we give here is somewhat incomplete. We expect the asker to fill in some of the blanks on their own. People actually learn better that way.

This from Mary:

Please THINK of the logic. You chose a setting which only allows full backups to happen on Monday, which means it will NOT  do a full backup on any other day.

Is exactly what I was trying to say Here:

One reason why it may not run the backup is that you allow full backup only on Friday. What happens if it is not Friday and you have not full backup to increment against??...........

However, if at that point you didn't understand what incremental backups were, how could you answer that question?

Hello mercyh

I'm still trying to restore one full backup and one incremental backup for fresh installation. After restored those backups, I don't know why can't login web GUI by correctly user name/password.

Now, using another machine to do this again!

Quite simple :

1. Install the new machine with a fresh sme without any contrib, but *** with the same name and domain ***

2. Go to the server-manager backup panel

3, enter the parameters for your workstation backup

4. restore your backup

Hello

I just tried restore one full and one incremental backup with "Restore from workstation",

Used one testing Windows XP to login domain but failed ... this machine already joined domain before restore.

And then re-join the domain that work .... , the question is if there are 200 workstation so I have to re-join 200times?

Thanks !

If a backup and restore are correctly done, then the machine accounts for each workstation will also be backed up and restored.
If after restore you cannot login to the domain then something has gone wrong with the restore, perhaps the machine accounts were not included in the backup or were not restored, or you did the restore process incorrectly.

Did you make any changes to the backup inclusions via custom templates or otherwise ?

This comment concerns me.
You should NOT be trying to restore both a full and a incremental backup.
I think you have a misunderstanding about incremental backups.

In the event you want to restore your whole system to the most recent backup, then you ONLY select the most recent backup to restore (ie the most recent date) whether it displays as a full or an incremental.

The incremental backup will include ALL the full data it is based upon (ie the set it is part of).

For now I suggest you stop rejoining machines to the domain as you should not have to do that.
When you correctly perform your restore again, you will have to unjoin and rejoin that one machine again, so don't do that any more.

Note you MUST always start with a fresh install of sme server operating system, so start again and this time only perform the backup once, selecting the most recent dated backup whether it is full or incremental.

To requote jpl procedure, with some extra coments:

1. Install the new machine with a fresh sme without any contrib, but with the same name and domain

2. Go to the server-manager Backup or restore panel

3, Enter the parameters for your workstation backup & save

4. Open the Backup or restore panel, select Restore from workstation, then where it says Select backup file: Select the most recent backup from the pull down list. If the last one that was done was an incremental, then select that. If the last one that was done was a full then select that. Remember a incremental will also include the full data from the set it is part of. Perform the restore of your backup by clicking the Restore Fom Workstation button.
ONLY DO THIS ONCE.

5. Reboot
Please search before asking, an answer may already exist.

Thanks all

I used a new Window XP to join domain, the restored domain doesn't has this Windows XP machine record, so the machine cannot join domain is right.

Thanks !
