E-smith/samba shares with Linux
« on: March 29, 2000, 09:05:02 AM »
I'm using e-smith 3.1 for gateway/file server for mixed network including linux and win98. The only method I've found to map the samba share (windows workgroup) on a linux box is with Corel File Manager. All windows or samba computers are a branch on the tree and allow drag and drop between any of them.

I'd like to use real Debian instead, but I really like being able to share files seamlessly in a file manager. Any ideas on how to do this outside of Corel? How about kruiser?

I don't know anything about kruiser, sorry. But for accessing e-smith shares from a linux file manager you need to install and configure smbfs on your client machines, or you need to use a file manager which can use an smbclient or ftp client interface to access the files, and present the files to the user through the file manager interface. I think that Midnight Commander can do this, and there are probably others as well.

I'm sorry that I can't be more helpful - this is really a client end related problem and not a server issue.

If you find a good solution then please let us know about it.

I use a program called "xsmbrowser" that works great for browsing shares in a mixed WIN/Linux network. Its not as point and click as Corel's file manager but it gets the job done.
The URL for the file is: http://www.public.iastate.edu/~chadspen/
I think there are a few more programs like this around, but I like this one. It does work with E-Smith also. (from another system though as it is graphical)

Personally, I just put any files I wish to transfer into a users account folder on the e-smith server regardless of whether I'm in Linux on e-smith, or log on in Windows as the same user.

This has been simple, but perhaps not as elegant as the software suggested by John Helms.
