Admin Console - Peform USB Backup
« on: July 02, 2010, 05:28:00 AM »
Hi all,

I have just backed up our server using the perform USB backup option in the admin console which seemed to  go fine.

I installed SME 7.5 on a test server and when asked whether I would like to restore from a USB, I selected yes. The admin console then requested that the USB with the backup be inserted, which I did.

I was presented with two options, CD ROM or USB disk, I duly selected the USB option.

SME located my backup file on the USB I had inserted, which I then selected. It then started to restore. After about minute I was asked to create a password (same screen from  the configure server option in the admin console) which I did.

A few moments a log in screen appeared.

I am assuming that the restore is continuing in the background, am I right in this assumption? If I am, is there anyway I can check the progress of the restore?

If I am incorrect, how can I check  that the restore process is not taking place?

Thanks again for all your help!

That does not sound like a correct sequence of events.
You need to check the log files to see what happened or what did not happen.
In server manager View log files, look at messages log file around the time of the "supposed" restore.

Diagnosing why something did or did not happen is another step.
Initially check that there is a backup file on your USB drive.
Mount the drive and take a look.
Please search before asking, an answer may already exist.

Thanks for the info. I checked everything and it seems that they USB drive could be dodgy according to the log files. Time to purchase as new drive I guess.

Thanks again!

Hi All,

After purchasing a new USB drive, everything restored very nicely and very smoothly.

I do have one problem and that is that SME doesn't seem to recognize the entire RAID5 array. I am using hardware RAID so SME will see only one 6TB disk. The problem is that it seems that it can't create a partition greater than 2TB. This is what I get when I use fdisk -l

[root@server7 ~]# fdisk -l

Disk /dev/cciss/c0d0: 6001.0 GB, 6001095959040 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 729591 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Device Boot      Start         End      Blocks   Id  System
/dev/cciss/c0d0p1   *           1          13      104391   fd  Linux raid autodetect
/dev/cciss/c0d0p2              14          13  2147480842+  fd  Linux raid autodetect

Is there anyway to 'grow' the partition so that SME can access all this extra disk space?

I check the following http://bugs.contribs.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1963 and it seems that it is an issue with Anaconda using fdisk during the setup as fdisk cannot create partitions greater than 2TB.

Is there anything I can do to get access to this extra space?

thanks for all your help as ever!

Diagnosing why something did or did not happen is another step.

The software should "just work", or it should tell you why it didn't work. Diagnosing why the SME software hasn't worked is something which should be done in the bug tracker.

Mary, please direct people to the bug tracker, rather than suggesting they diagnose their own probems. Thanks.

Please report your initial backup restore problem to bugzilla. It seems that Charlie may want to add error message code to SME server to better handle situations like yours ie drive apparently faulty but no indication given by the SME server processes of what is going on. Obviously this seems to be a "state or condition" that the existing code does not cater for or handle as adequately as it should. Please start the software improvement process rolling by adding your bug report, thanks.

As far as your other partition size issue is concerned, please lodge that as a seperate bug report.

Hi mary (and charlie),

Thanks again for your prompt replys, it is really appreciated. I will file the bug reports today. I thought I'd better test the waters in this forum first, before filing these issues as bugs. Sometimes it is hard to know whether an issue is a bug or a user misunderstanding of SME.

Thanks again for a fantastic distro.
