I strongly advise you not to do this. For reliable and trouble free performance, use only hardware which is supported by the standard SME software set.

CentOS 4.8 includes updated support for the e1000e chipset:

What hardware do you have which makes you think you should install an "updated" e1000e driver?

I see that you did mention what hardware you wished to support. Red Hat have already said that they will not be adding support for that hardware:

When SME8 is released you will have support for that NIC.
