HDD Size with SME 8.0
« on: February 17, 2013, 11:56:34 PM »
Hi,

I plan to setup a new server with large HDDs. Did anyone experienced 3To HDDs with SME Server 8.0?
I would have the system on a 500Go Drive and then 2 HDDs of 3To.

Thanks for your advise...

Please read recent posts & familiarize yourself with the Forums (ie use search). This was answered about 10 posts ago

As I understand it, what you propose should work OK if done correctly as per this post

Ouch... for some reasons, my yesterday's search was far from perfect. This somehow gives me the opportunity to say thank you to the community for this great distribution.
I'll go with 2To drives as I don't want to take too much risks.

Thanks again.

If you want even less risk & hassle, then do not use the 500Gb drive with the system only installed on it,

Simply build the server with 2 x 2Tb drives in a software RAID1 array. The less number of drives, the greater the reliability, and with a 2 disk RAID1 array easier repair or replacement.

I think it can be done.
Replace the 500gb disk one at a time with the 3tb disk so the Raid can rebuild on the 3TB disk. Then when both disk have been replaced and rebuilt, you will have a 500gb partition on two 3TB disks. Grow the lvm to the full 3TB capacity.
You can't install on 3TB, but you should be able to utilize 3TB nevertheless.
SME 8.0
Quad 6600
8gb DDR2 800
8 TB RAID 5
Dual Gigabit NIC
I Still Don't KNOW WHAT I AM DOING. Please, don't assume I know anything about Linux or Centos, I just know hardware
