Since you say you are behind a firewall, you need to read the manual for your firewall hardware to see how to forward a port. Read thefirewall manual for that. If the firewall is your modem/router, here is a link that may help http://www.wikihow.com/Set-Up-Port-Forwarding-on-a-Router .

Otherwise, Google is your friend - search for "port forwarding"- there are many results.

The following section of the Administration Manual may help with set-up of email http://wiki.contribs.org/SME_Server:Documentation:Administration_Manual:Chapter13#E-mail

and even better http://wiki.contribs.org/Email

And search the forums for help on how to set up email - see the dark blue/grey set of Tabs towards the top of the forums page? See the Tab marked Search? Use that.

Cheers
Ian

There are a tool name Lazy Admin Tool (LAT) for this pourpouse (and others).
It may have some small problems with SME8 (I do not used it on SME8 yet).

it is a known fact that some providers of mail as gmail (but i think It is possible that there are much more) don't accept connexions from a mail server  with a dynamic IP. It is done to prevent SPAM. So the only workaround I know is to set a smtp relay in the server-manager, section mail server.
when i speak about  smtp relay, i speak about an account which allow you to connect to a google mail account or any other mail account (for example i use the smtp service offers by my ISP).

If i remember well all mails sent by a google smtp account will  have the address be rewritten with the google mail address, It is for that I use the smtp of my ISP, but my tests were made a long time ago.
Before I have  used the smtp of my provider of internet domain (1&1) but i have had some problems of mails refused by other smtp because 1&1 was known as a spammer.

You have to configure gmail to allow POP or IMAP access or otherwise set up Forwarding to your server based email address.

You mention both cannot send & cannot receive, which is it, which are you talking about ? Please be more clear & precise.

I suggest you also read the SME Manual Appendix re DNS, SPF etc.

Please search before asking, an answer may already exist.
