Auth Error using ISP SmartHost to send mail

Hi

No mail going away using as smart-host the providers one; in /var/log/qmail/current I can find the following error:

Remote_host_said:_454_TLS_not_available_due_to_temporary_reason_[SSL_wants_a_read_first]451_Could_not_auth_to_mail_server

The system worked fine until now; I suppose the ISP has made some change but considering that all changes shold be made customer-side I tried some tricks found http://wiki.contribs.org/Email but no results (particularly I tried to switch to port 465 and/or disabling TLS before authentication (http://wiki.contribs.org/Email#SMTP_Authentication_TLS_before_Auth_disable_.26_enable).

No result  :(

Please check the logs of smtp-auth-proxy, and see bug 8202 (and bug 8205):

There is a very recent update to fix problems with authenticated SmartHost mail delivery. Make sure that you have it installed.

If you still have problems, create a new bug report containing details, including messages from your logs.

Hi Charlie

The smtp-auth-proxy gives: @4000000052fbae7d2ac5e1ec SMTP authentication with ISP server failed

and other non relevant errors related to my attempts. I'll try this evening with debug enabled (I've temporarly solved leaving the customer to use my SMTP) and original setting restored.

Applied the patch as suggested in BUG 8202: no result. Applied debug options and going to file a new BUG (8207).

That is not relevant to your problem. That setting affects the connection between your local clients (mail user agents) and your server (incoming to your server). The log message you quoted concerns a problem between your server and your ISP's server (outbound from your server).

Finally they replied: they suggest to switch to SMTPS even if the customer never received a notification about the necessity to change its config . . . . .  :evil:
