My answer has two parts:
1) I don't know if you would consider me a developer or not -- I've contributed 2 - 4 bug fixes since joining the forums in 2004, but lots of forum posts and a wiki page or two.
2) When I do try to 'develop', I tend to get dragged off elsewhere, leaving the specific task/bug at hand incomplete.

Since I have been unsuccessful at doing what I would consider 'development', I try to be as helpful as I can in the forums and on the wiki.  Does that count?

It sure does! A perfect example!

I agree Michael, You are a patch commiter (and surely more), I recall some of yours. Sometime we are alone in work of development and it is not easy to see all the issues and finish the Job.
I would say continue Michael, stay around , go ahead when you can.
Sometime a patch is not used now, but it will be by someone later. Sometime the team is not ready to follow your idea, but maybe you can do a contrib with your code.

The most important is the willingness of doing things.
