Topic: static IP and DNS hosting

Hi e-smither,

I plan to setup e-smith as my web and mail server.

I have signed up an ASDL line with static IP from my local ISP and register a new domain name www.mycompany.com for my company.

I have read the documentation and search the mailing list for e-smith acting as the primary server to host my new domain name but didnt figure out the way.

My local ISP agreed to act as the secondary server.

Anyone care to share some tips on how-to set up e-smith acting as a primary server for my new domain?

without having had a search on the forum for this specific issue yet ( oh, sweet lazyness !! ), I'd also be glad to find a way getting my sme to act as my primary nameserver ( internal and internet ) - would save one machine on my net doing nothing but DNS.

It's my turn today to remind all our readers to once and a while read a manual.

Think of the poor folk who spend all that time and energy preparing this wonderful document, and you don't even read it?

I would suggest the following change in the software:
Everytime the system boots, it will ask you for a random sentence form the manual. If you fail to answer properly, you will be presented with one random chapter from the manual which you are forced to copy by hand and sharp pencil, and send back to the writers of the manual. Only after them receiving it by snailmail, will they give you a code to unlock the system..
All this will give you plenty time to actually read it, by which time you disable the code that asked for it in the first place, and we all live happy ever after...

ps.. if I miss something obvious in your question, I do apologize, but from experience I can say, that most time playing with e-smith goes into setting up things different from the defaults. I would suggest that filling in the blanks will get you going in 10 seconds flat. I have a feeling that you make life extremely difficult for yourself.
(the rest of the hints are found in the extremely useful manual, which as part of the initiation ceremony, will only be provided to those who take the time to search...)

Sign up with www.mydomain.com (free reg) and add your new domain to your account. Select MyDomainPlus service for your new domain and then point your domain at your Static IP address.

What about a MX entry for mail.mycompany.com ? Will that be needed or do you just need to point the IP?

Yeah, I usually setup a mail exchange host with a distance of 5 or 10.
