We have updates.
Just when you think the coast is clear....
A bit like 4 funerals and an excavation back here.
Trevor the buiding king is back from extended travels.
JP almost has his footing back (a metaphorical joke).
Brian has finally untangled life.
Bugs fixed. Tweaks done. Beta is hull down on the horizon. Yay!!!!!
At which point a dirty great battleship hoves into view - cue shark music - and blows it out of the water.
"Bother" said Pooh as the pin fell out of the handgrenade.
"WTF?" you ask.
WTF indeed. I'll try to explain with KISS.
So for us English speakers life was a breeze.
A-Z. Easy Peasy. None of your accented nonsense or Cyrillic Привет or Hanzi 再见stuff for us.
But JP had noticed an issue a long time ago with non en characters that caused occasional problems.
After a while it became apparent that while the command line handled fancy stuff like say é ok, there were issues in the server manager panels.
The long & short of it is the cli handled UTF-8 ok. We presumed the new server manager would use it too, but it seems some stuff studiously ignores that.
Which meant certain characters were being written incorrectly to the config databases causing some havoc, and when read back totally borked stuff. Cue chaos.
Pretty fugly, and a total blocker.
Of course the docs on this are a) minimal, b) obscure.
On top of which there didn't appear to be a simple(ish) solution.
Bring on the angst, team.....
For an idea on the scale of the issue check the depends and blocks for
https://bugs.koozali.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13027Anyways, it so happens that JP is a bit of a clever bugger and after some serious stress where we could do little but offer condolences & moral support, he found a relatively simple and elegant solution.
All whilst his house is dug up, computer discombobulated, wife, kids, Koozali cluster attacked, borked quotas, and hugely stressful job.
So to all of you out there reading this and just sitting and waiting, please note this stuff doesn't build itself.
It requires dedication & time. More than anything it needs help which ANYONE can do.
Even YOU.
As I have have already said.
Don't ask when it will be ready. Ask what you can do to help.
We are all up to our necks in our own lives, but manage to make a bit of time to do this, for free.
You can too.
Come and help please. We need people to test to find these sort of issues.
You do NOT need to be a developer. A computer and a bit of time is all that is required.
We look forward to hearing how you are going to help us (especially if you use a character set other than English).
In the meantime a Beta will be released when it is ready, and not before. If you want that to be sooner rather than later, come and help make it happen.
Thank you.
