Hello.
I've installed version 3.1 in server and gateway mode. Before I get to the real issue for me, I'd like to say that this was an amazingly simple setup. You should know that downloading from your ftp site through Navigator corrupted the file; but when I used ftp software, everything went smoothly. Also, generating the boot disk using rawrite under windows caused the setup to fail at the point when linuz was loading. When I generated the boot disk under a different Linux installation, everything went well and setup couldn't have been faster or smoother. Very impressive!
Like others who have submitted here, I'm not having any trouble with the local network (it's a thing of beauty!) but I am having trouble connecting to my ISP via dialup. I'm using a modem that worked with a Caldera installation (TI 33.6 v/f/d, USR Sportster-type), so that can't be the problem -- and when I pick up the receiver, the machine is clearly trying to make a connection, so it's dialing out properly. It just never completes the connection. I'll have a look at the log files and see if there are any clues there, but I wonder whether there's a protocol issue (PPP, SLIP, etc) that you know about. And I don't know how to tell which method of authentication to my ISP the modem is using, for instance. (I'd love to be able to use the KPPP program I used with Caldera, here. Can I?)
Also, can you tell me whether the modem will disconnect after a certain time-out period or will it be connected as long as the machine is running? How do I disconnect either manually (a la Windoze Internet connection program) or from another machine on my internal network (e.g., automatically via time-out)?
Thanks for your help!
