Is the IMAP server not IMAP4Rev1-compliant?
« on: November 24, 2002, 03:26:51 PM »
I'm trying to use Pmail as a mail client, but it is not possible to connect to the IMAP server on my SME v. 5.5.

The reason for this is, that the IMAP server fails to respond to a command requesting the delimiter character used in folder hierarchies (the LIST command). This should be a quite standard request and it seem to me that the IMAP server is not IMAP 4 rev. 1 compliant.

Anyone know if this is the case - and maybe if there is a fix to this?

Telneting to my SME 5.5 update 2 box on port 143 shows:

IMAP4rev1 v12.264 server ready

That would be surprising, since the IMAP server used was written by the authors of the IMAP4 specification.

What makes you think that "the IMAP server fails to respond to a command requesting the delimiter character ...."? Are you sure that you aren't seeing a bug in Pmail?

Remember that the correct place to report bugs or suspected bugs is to bugs@e-smith.com.

Yes I have seen that, and I think it may be a problem with pmail. I'm still looking for a fix.

Hi Charlie,

I got an response back from a tecnician from pmail. It is possible to debug the "traffic" to/from the IMAP-server from Pmail, and they could se, that the response from the IMAP-server was not what they think is "IMAP4Rev1-compliant".

This is the input from my log-file:

 00:17:59.063 << 0015 A2 LIST "" ""\0D\0A
 00:17:59.063 >> 0022 A2 OK LIST completed\0D\0A

and this is the comment from the Pmail tech:

> > The server should have returned the delimiter character in the response
> > line above so that Pegasus Mail would know which character to treat as
> > the delimiter for the folder hierarchy.  Pegasus Mail will refuse to talk to

I'm cetainly not an expert within this area. The reason why I placed my entry in this forum is simply because I wanted to know if the IMAP-server comply to IMAP4Rev1.

I have no idea how I can tell the guys from Pmail, that they may be wrong. Do you know if the LIST command used above is part of the standard IMAP4 commands?

Hi Guys,

I'm experiencing this same problem, here is a whole copy of the log I got from PMail (with the old IP address masked...):

--- Thu, 12 Dec 2002 12:15:59 ---
Connect to 'xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx' port 143, timeout 15.
12:15:59.325 >> 0063 * OK atm-parts-1.atm-parts.com IMAP4rev1 v12.264 server ready\0D\0A
12:15:59.325 << 0026 A1 LOGIN "sales" "sales"\0D\0A
12:15:59.430 >> 0023 A1 OK LOGIN completed\0D\0A
12:15:59.435 << 0015 A2 LIST "" ""\0D\0A
12:15:59.435 >> 0022 A2 OK LIST completed\0D\0A
12:15:59.435 << 0011 A2 LOGOUT\0D\0A
12:15:59.435 >> 0073 * BYE atm-parts-1.atm-parts.com IMAP4rev1 server terminating connection\0D\0A
12:15:59.435 >> 0024 A2 OK LOGOUT completed\0D\0A
--- Connection closed normally at Thu, 12 Dec 2002 12:15:59. ---

It all appears to run along ok, but PMail reports an error communicating with the server. If anyone who has experienced this could advise some kind of workaround that would be fantastic! Please don't make me use Outlook again!!

Thanx
Matt
