Topic: Newbie Q: Can I "host" email acounts?

Hi there

I've bought my last name as a domain. Now I've installed SME Server 5.5 and everything is working just fine. I've set up some acounts and email retrieval and delivery works just fine as well. But I want to let other users (family) outside my LAN to get acces to mail-accounts I've set up for them. How can I do that? I've read the documentation and searched the forum but have somehow missed the points. Can someone help?

When connecting from outside, Outlook Express returns the following error:

"... server: 'mail.myserver.com', Protocol: POP3, Port 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10053, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F", where myserver of cource is a substitute

How should I set up OE and my SME?

I think first of you will want your system to be secure so maybe you should take a look at http://www.pagefault.org/ for secure e-mail add-on. That way usernames and passwords don't get thrown across the internet uncoded. I am guessing here but I think port 110 is normally closed to the outside for security reasons. port 25 is needed for receiving mail so its open.

For now before installing you can activate using the server-manager secure webmail knda like hotmail just without the nagscreens and banners

does your server has a fixed IP or are you using some dynamic dns?

If you just want to let them use the email address, make them users and "Forward email to:"  : )

Dear Frank

In OE use www.yourdomain.com for the smtp and the pop3 settings.

In server manager make sure you set Other email settings/POP and IMAP server access to Public.

That should do it, otherwise you have another problem.

I had the same problem after adding secure SMTP and POP3 with Outlook XP. Install the servicepack for Office and search this forum how to secure SMTP and POP3 with SSL

As long as you've enabled public access in Server Manager, you should be able to check IMAP or POP3 mail from anywhere. Your problem may be due to trying to make a secure connection to port 110... However, users won't be able to send mail through your server (they'll need to use their own ISP's SMTP server instead). You'll need to install Damien's package (from www.pagefault.org) as suggested if you want to allow secure access to your SMTP server from outside the LAN.

I'll try your suggestions and feel free to ask for more help. My plan was not to let them send mail through my server only to retrieve mail from it. I'm aware of the relay problem.
