Adding an XP machine to domain
« on: February 25, 2003, 02:43:36 AM »
Hi,

I have:
SME server 5.6
Samba acting as pdc
Windows XP pro

Can anyone give me instructions on how to make my XP pro join the domain?  Everything I have tried so far gives me an error that it cannot find the domain (trying to look up srv records on the dns server).

Any tips?
Tia
Andrew.

Hi Andrew

Good to see another Agent and Mailtraq user on here...

Have a look at:

You need to apply the registry fix to XP before you can join a Samba domain, all is explained in the thread.

You will also probably want to update to Samba 2.2.7a see

Hi,

This still does not work:

When it asks me for a username/password I use admin and use the admin password on the SME server.  When it asks me for the domain I enter in "hodgson" which is currently the workgroup.

I get this error:
The domain name HODGSON might be a NetBIOS domain name.  If this is the case, verify that the domain name is properly registered with WINS.

If you are certain that the name is not a NetBIOS domain name, then the following information can help you troubleshoot your DNS configuration.

The following error occurred when DNS was queried for the service location (SRV) resource record used to locate a domain controller for domain HODGSON:

The error was: "DNS name does not exist."
(error code 0x0000232B RCODE_NAME_ERROR)

The query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.HODGSON

Common causes of this error include the following:

- The DNS SRV record is not registered in DNS.

- One or more of the following zones do not include delegation to its child zone:

HODGSON
. (the root zone)

You need to change the workgroup name to something bogus first.

Hi,

Currently the workgroup is set to "hodgson" in the web interface.  Changing this to "test" did not make any difference, though I am not 100% sure that I should put the workgroup name in the domain name field.  Adding either hodgsonfamily.org (the Internet domain), or brookfield.hodgsonfamily.org (the host name) all gives the same error.  I have applied the XP patch.

Any other suggestions?
Tia.

Sorry - the workgroup name on the XP box needs to be different to the "domain" you are trying to join.
