Hi,

For some reason when using SME 5.6 with OE 6.0, messages are not removed from the IMAP server when they are marked as deleted - in OE, we have in tools | options | maintanance to purge deleted messages from imap folders.

Has anyone else come accros this?

This is the way it's supposed to work.  Same thing with Lookout, webmail, or probably any other IMAP client.  You can probably set some of them to purge messages on exit, though.

I realise what is happening here, but Outlook Express doesn't seem to be able to delete the messages, as it is set to remove messages when you exit the folder.  How else can you remove messages?

For reference here is a small portion of the mail log where I went and removed some message using OE (yuck!) and they were marked as deleted but were not removed from the server.  They remove fine using the web interface.

This is a known bug that I reported back in the beta testing.  It was not deemed as a priority and was determined that outlook was at fault.  As far as I know there isn't any plan to fix this problem.

The problem is the following.  If you delete a message in one thread and try to purge it in another then the message never gets pruged (removed).  If in outlook or outlook express you delete a message and then purge it manually it will usually remove the message.

However if as stated above you say to purge the message on exit it doesn't get removed because it happens in a different thread.  The same thing happens if you move a message from one folder to another.

The way I have found around this is to move a message and then either switch to another account and back or logoff and back in.  At this point you can manually purge messages.

I too have this with 5.5. I'm not sure what version it started with, but it did work before. Upon upgrading to 5.0 I believe, the option to automatically purge messages just stopped working. I have never had any problems manually purging messages though.

Due to the disk burning out on Saturday I no longer have a SME server, just after I got it working well

Anyway, in the future I am going to rebuild it, so how do I manually purge in Outlook Express?

Click the "Purge Messages" button. It should be on the toolbar by default for an IMAP account. The button is a picture of 3 envelopes with an X.
