access to network but not internet
« on: June 30, 2003, 09:08:56 AM »
Ugg, I'm rather frustrated with this whole situation.
Recently, I set up sme 5.12 (later versions of sme created hardware conflicts) to act as a router for my home network which consisted of one computer and an x-box.  Everything has been fine until I decided to add another computer to the network.  Now I cant access the internet , but can access other computers. Both computers that are on the network are running windows xp pro sp1. Is there something I need to turn on in sme admin console to enable multiple computers to pull an IP?? I tried statically setting them on each computer and that didnt work.  I used to be able to access the internt before I plugged in the computer, now none of them can. Is this a Windows xp problem? or an SME problem? Any Ideas??? I'm lost... And I find it odd that msn messenger will log on and tell me when i get new emails, but I cant get Inetrnet explorer to connect. All I can do is browse the network.
Thanks for any help,
Jon Bradley

Jon,

if Messenger can connect, your sme box is working fine. You can check by using option 4 (Test Internet connection) from the admin console on your server.

How have you configured your XP boxes?
They should just be set up to get everything via DHCP (ie. Obtain IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically).
You can check what IP address etc. your workastations are using with the 'ipconfig /all' command (from a dos box - start/run/command).
In a typical setup your Gateway, DHCP, DNS & WINS servers will all be your sme box.

Thanks for responding to my post Trevor.
I double checked all my settings for both xp pro computers and they are configured to obtain ip adressess automaticallly, and dns addresses automatically, and dhcp is enabled.  I'm still stuck.

Can you ping each box (sme especially) in the network?  Didn't you accidently turn on the firewall built in XP?  Could you post the outcome of a ipconfig /all on a xp box here?

Is one of the XP boxes acting as a DHCP server (ie. is it set up for Internet Connection Sharing - this needs to be turned off)?

How many IP addresses are allocated via DHCP (assume that you left it at the default, but you can select anything)?

Did you re-plug the boxes when you added the extra one (possibly getting the SME in/out connectors mixed up)?

I am assuming the standard home setup
modem (or cable/dsl) ==> sme ==> hub ==> other PC's

Can you contact the internet from the sme box (eg. ping www.e-smith.org)?

Starting to run out of ideas, but if you post some more info (eg. ipconfig /all info from one of the XP boxes and ifconfig info from the sme) we may be able to help.

Internet Explorer doesn't have anything checked for LAN settings, and I've tried both with automatically detect settings on and off. Also,
on LAN Connection Properties: Internet Protocol Properties are obtain both automatically (IP and DNS) and in advanced DHCP is enabled, on the DNS append primary and connection specific DNS suffixes is checked and append parent suffixes of the primary DNS Suffix is checked. Also Register this connection's addresses in DNS is checked.

It seems the XP box is getting a 68.112.167.178 when it
should be getting a 10.0.0.x  address

can you draw a picture of how the computers are
connected?

On the XP box(es)

start->MyNetworkPlaces
"Set up a home or small office network"
next
next
"This computer connects to the internet ..."
Enter a computer description
Enter a computer name
next
Enter the E-Smith workgroup name -
With default server setting, browse to http://192.168.1.2/e-smith-manager
     Click on "workgroup"
The entry listed in "Windows workgroup"
copy/paste into the entry on the XP box
My advice is to use all lower case workgroup names
MS does not properly respect UC/LC
next
MS will do stupid graphics now.
After computing one of the choices will be
"I do not need to set up other computers" or something like that.

Then in IE
Tools->Internet Options->Connections->Lan Settings
Turn off "Automatically detect settings"
OK
OK
Exit IE
Restart IE
Tools->Internet Options->Connections->Lan Settings
Turn on "Automatically detect settings"
OK
OK
See if you can see yahoo now.
Turning off the on autodetect seems to clear out the bad connection so MS/IE re-establishes connection information.

Then go do the same to the other XP box.

Hope this works for you. It does for me.

I'm assuming you now have your sme supplying the ip addresses and not the router, what are your proxy settings on you browser? do you  have 3128 as your port? If you can ping you must be able to connect.  There is something very simple that is not set.

Jon,

that all looks Ok to me, and if you are able to connect from the sme box and ping from the XP box......

You mentioned a router. Is that now bypassed (ie. you are using the sme instead), or is it still in the mix somehow? If it's still there is it passing through the appropriate DNS info to the sme box (can you use lynx from the sme box to look at any external site?)?

I assume that everything was working fine when directly connected (ie. it's not a problem with the ISP)?

Hi Jon,

In IE, do you actually have the 'Use Proxy Server for you LAN' check box ticked in Tools -> Internet Options -> Connections -> LAN Settings. Also with the correct address (looks like it should be Address: 10.0.0.1 Port: 8000). And check that under Advanced too...

Steve,
I should of clarified this earlier, whoops. I'm not using a router, I'm using a 5 port swtich and sme to route.  It seems to be dishing out local ip's just fine. I dont have anything set up for proxy settings, but interestingly enough in LAN settings in IE, use automatic configuration script has the numbers 3128 in the space provided even though it's not checked, and when i do check it it makes no difference. Also, I tried fooling around with the proxy settings by doing the following: checking the box in IE LAN settings and specifying the address of 10.0.0.1 and the port of 3165 and i also tried 3128. Should I change the address to the ip sme assigns me, or do I want the host address? As of now, I have undone these settings so I can start from scratch if needed.
Thanks for the help,
Jon Bradley

Matt,
I tried your suggestion but I still can't browse the web. Perhaps this is just coincidence but I noticed that when I did try to browse while I had specifed the proxy server settings I recieved a much faster "cannot find server" responce then when I don't have anyt proxy settings set up.
Just a thought. I too am beginning to think that I've overlooked something really simple here, I just don't know what it is...

Hi,

0.  First turn off all proxy settings..

1.  Try pinging 216.239.51.100
      (It's google's IP address)

2.  Try pinging google.com

3.  Try opening http://216.239.51.100

4. I'm assuming that you have the setup as

     Internet --> eth1 of SME  | eth0 of SME --> Switch ---> XP Box

5.  Login to the sme box as root

5a.  from the shell, lynx google.com

5b.  from the shell, lynx 216.239.51.100

      (use "q" to exit lynx)

Tell me what happens,

Hi Ed,
Thanks for the help.

I made sure all the proxy junk was turned off and then pinged google both using a numerical address and using the"google.com" address and I  got a 4out of 4 response with good timings. You were correct about my ethernet settings, I'm using the standard set up with eth1 being internet and eth0 going to the switch and then computers.
I also used lynx to ping google using both numerical and "google.com" and both attempts where successful.
Hope this helps,

Also try setting your XP box to manual IP DNS using the same settings as the server gives you and also adding the ip of the DNS server of your ISP as a secondary DNS server. Then see if you can access a site.

It looks like your problem is not the name resolution since you can ping by name, but with your IE.
Try to point your IE browser to SME itself and see if your default page shows "This ibay has not been customized yet"
Also check in the IE help/about if you have ssl cipher installed. Try to reinstall IE or upgrade it with all the service packs.
As an alternative, download and try Netscape, Mozilla, Opera or any other browsers and test them.

This isn't a DHCP lease from your SME server. You'll struggle until you connect things so that your client *does* get a DHCP lease from your SME server - and from no-where else.

I tried specifying the dns in both primary and secondary but I still can't access the internet.  As for it being an IE issue, I'm going to download a few of the mentioned browsers and give it a whirl.  I have a feeling it's an sme issue though, because of the dhcp lease mentioned and because I just installed windows 2000 pro and I have the same problems on that box too.  I don't think it's a windows thing, but then again what do i know? After all, I can't get this damn router to work.. UGGGG!

Well from what I've seen, it seems that the

Windows is working
DNS is working
Routing is working

* I also used lynx to ping google using both numerical and "google.com" and both attempts where
(I'm assuming that you saw the google home page..)
---------------------------------------------------------
One last thing to try

from your w2k box,
Open a cmd shell

You type: telnet www.yahoo.com 80
You get:  (blank screen)
You type: 100
You get: bunch of text scrolling then ...  Connection to host lost.

** Note there is a space between www.yahoo.com and 80
Result:  If you saw a bunch of html text, something is wrong with the browser.  Try a new browser...
Otherwise, something is blocking port 80.. go to the next line....

------------------------------------------------------------------------
So what addon's have you installed on the SME box?
If nothing then I would try reinstalling SME....

Another though is squid is not working right on the SME server and gives a bad respond to your browser. Try to restart the whole server and watch for the initialisation messages. It should show OK for masq and squid. You can also check in the log file as well as try to restart the services squid and masq from the root command line.

Well I followed the instructions given, neither 80 or 100 did any good, coudlnt connect through either ports. Something is very wrong with squid though. I don't know how to fix it, but something is definitley wrong...
Thanks for the help,

I wonder if I'm in need of some updates??? Perhaps something that updates squid,... Or maybe I can use the sme 5.12 CD to try to "fix" the squid issue, and then try disabling it. I don't know what to do honestly, but a friend said that I don't "need" squid for the simple fucntions I'm using sme for. Huh. I wish I could upgrade to a newer version but I can't seem to get past the hanging in the install process...

It doesn't seem that you have done a lot of customizations. If you have data in the ibays copy it to the workstation. That part works, right?
You don't have to upgrade, just reinstall it. You will be probably better off installing newer release 5.5 or 5.6 and then apply the latest update to corresponding version.
It may be just faster for you to reinstall, then trobleshoot that is wrong with current (older) version you have.

I think we need to start again from the beginning
Get a telephone - plug the cable from the back of the modem into the phone - do you get a dial tone? If yes then carry on, otherwise your line is faulty
From the prompt type ls -l >/ttyS0/1/2 - which one makes the lights flash?
In minicom Press CTRL+A then O - go down to serial port setup - does the serial device match which ttyS you ls -l'd to?
If not I would swap com ports - changing the port in the software i find doesn't always work - so swap it physically and list to the port stated in minicom until you find the right port
Once that is done go into minicom type atdt########
if it comes up with no dialtone then type atdtx3#######
This should now dial.

Let us know if it works

Hi Steve,
Thanks for helping out.
I'm pretty sure the line I'm using isn't faulty because I'm using it for one of my xp boxes so I can get to the net. Also, I'm pretty sure both NICs are functional and properly configured because I can ping and "talk to the net" through the network. I'm using a standard cable modem, switch, and router set up (the router being sme). I guess I'm wondering whats up with squid???
Why can't I access  the pid file? what's wrong with it? and how do i fix it.
