Matt,
I tried your suggestion but I still can't browse the web. Perhaps this is just coincidence but I noticed that when I did try to browse while I had specifed the proxy server settings I recieved a much faster "cannot find server" responce then when I don't have anyt proxy settings set up.
Just a thought. I too am beginning to think that I've overlooked something really simple here, I just don't know what it is...
Thanks,
Jon Bradley

Hi,

0.  First turn off all proxy settings..

1.  Try pinging 216.239.51.100
      (It's google's IP address)

2.  Try pinging google.com

3.  Try opening http://216.239.51.100

4. I'm assuming that you have the setup as

     Internet --> eth1 of SME  | eth0 of SME --> Switch ---> XP Box

5.  Login to the sme box as root

5a.  from the shell, lynx google.com

5b.  from the shell, lynx 216.239.51.100

      (use "q" to exit lynx)

Tell me what happens,

ed

Hi Ed,
Thanks for the help.

I made sure all the proxy junk was turned off and then pinged google both using a numerical address and using the"google.com" address and I  got a 4out of 4 response with good timings. You were correct about my ethernet settings, I'm using the standard set up with eth1 being internet and eth0 going to the switch and then computers.
I also used lynx to ping google using both numerical and "google.com" and both attempts where successful.
Hope this helps,
Thanks,
Jon Bradley

Sometimes, IE exhibits this odd behavior and clearing its cache (temp internet files) helps.

Also try setting your XP box to manual IP DNS using the same settings as the server gives you and also adding the ip of the DNS server of your ISP as a secondary DNS server. Then see if you can access a site.

It looks like your problem is not the name resolution since you can ping by name, but with your IE.
Try to point your IE browser to SME itself and see if your default page shows "This ibay has not been customized yet"
Also check in the IE help/about if you have ssl cipher installed. Try to reinstall IE or upgrade it with all the service packs.
As an alternative, download and try Netscape, Mozilla, Opera or any other browsers and test them.

This isn't a DHCP lease from your SME server. You'll struggle until you connect things so that your client *does* get a DHCP lease from your SME server - and from no-where else.

I tried specifying the dns in both primary and secondary but I still can't access the internet.  As for it being an IE issue, I'm going to download a few of the mentioned browsers and give it a whirl.  I have a feeling it's an sme issue though, because of the dhcp lease mentioned and because I just installed windows 2000 pro and I have the same problems on that box too.  I don't think it's a windows thing, but then again what do i know? After all, I can't get this damn router to work.. UGGGG!
Thanks for the suggestions and help and I'm gonna keep trying,

The comment abut the *lease* thing can be .. ummm.. ignored.
I think Charlie is commenting on the old ipconfig listing and not the
new one posted

hmm,
I didn't notice the ip, but before I was getting the ip's 10.0.0.1001 and 10.0.0.102 as I had set up the router to dish out these ip's....
OOPPPPSSS!!!!
I did the ipconfig while I had the internet directly plugged in to one of the pc's so I could check my email and reply to your posts...DUH!!! I'll have to re-post the ipconfig with the internet plugged into the sme box ..
HeHe, I forgot in the midst of replying to the email. Thanks for being patient and helpful rather then scolding and humiliating me..heheh..I'll re-post when I get home.
Thanks,
Jon Bradley

Well from what I've seen, it seems that the

Windows is working
DNS is working
Routing is working

* I also used lynx to ping google using both numerical and "google.com" and both attempts where
(I'm assuming that you saw the google home page..)
---------------------------------------------------------
One last thing to try

from your w2k box,
Open a cmd shell

You type: telnet www.yahoo.com 80
You get:  (blank screen)
You type: 100
You get: bunch of text scrolling then ...  Connection to host lost.

** Note there is a space between www.yahoo.com and 80
Result:  If you saw a bunch of html text, something is wrong with the browser.  Try a new browser...
Otherwise, something is blocking port 80.. go to the next line....

------------------------------------------------------------------------
So what addon's have you installed on the SME box?
If nothing then I would try reinstalling SME....

Another though is squid is not working right on the SME server and gives a bad respond to your browser. Try to restart the whole server and watch for the initialisation messages. It should show OK for masq and squid. You can also check in the log file as well as try to restart the services squid and masq from the root command line.
