Topic: access to network but not internet

Ugg, I'm rather frustrated with this whole situation.
Recently, I set up sme 5.12 (later versions of sme created hardware conflicts) to act as a router for my home network which consisted of one computer and an x-box.  Everything has been fine until I decided to add another computer to the network.  Now I cant access the internet , but can access other computers. Both computers that are on the network are running windows xp pro sp1. Is there something I need to turn on in sme admin console to enable multiple computers to pull an IP?? I tried statically setting them on each computer and that didnt work.  I used to be able to access the internt before I plugged in the computer, now none of them can. Is this a Windows xp problem? or an SME problem? Any Ideas??? I'm lost... And I find it odd that msn messenger will log on and tell me when i get new emails, but I cant get Inetrnet explorer to connect. All I can do is browse the network.

Jon,

if Messenger can connect, your sme box is working fine. You can check by using option 4 (Test Internet connection) from the admin console on your server.

How have you configured your XP boxes?
They should just be set up to get everything via DHCP (ie. Obtain IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically).
You can check what IP address etc. your workastations are using with the 'ipconfig /all' command (from a dos box - start/run/command).
In a typical setup your Gateway, DHCP, DNS & WINS servers will all be your sme box.

Thanks for responding to my post Trevor.
I double checked all my settings for both xp pro computers and they are configured to obtain ip adressess automaticallly, and dns addresses automatically, and dhcp is enabled.  I'm still stuck.

Can you ping each box (sme especially) in the network?  Didn't you accidently turn on the firewall built in XP?  Could you post the outcome of a ipconfig /all on a xp box here?

Is one of the XP boxes acting as a DHCP server (ie. is it set up for Internet Connection Sharing - this needs to be turned off)?

How many IP addresses are allocated via DHCP (assume that you left it at the default, but you can select anything)?

Did you re-plug the boxes when you added the extra one (possibly getting the SME in/out connectors mixed up)?

I am assuming the standard home setup
modem (or cable/dsl) ==> sme ==> hub ==> other PC's

Can you contact the internet from the sme box (eg. ping www.e-smith.org)?

Starting to run out of ideas, but if you post some more info (eg. ipconfig /all info from one of the XP boxes and ifconfig info from the sme) we may be able to help.

I ran the internet test in the admin console andi it's successful. And I can ping google in cmd in windows. But I can't use a browser to surf the web.
Neither xp boxes are set up for internet connection sharing, and I've gone through the settings a few times, but I'll tell you what they are as they seem to be importants.
Internet Explorer doesn't have anything checked for LAN settings, and I've tried both with automatically detect settings on and off. Also,
on LAN Connection Properties: Internet Protocol Properties are obtain both automatically (IP and DNS) and in advanced DHCP is enabled, on the DNS append primary and connection specific DNS suffixes is checked and append parent suffixes of the primary DNS Suffix is checked. Also Register this connection's addresses in DNS is checked.

Enter the E-Smith workgroup name -
     With default server setting, browse to http://192.168.1.2/e-smith-manager
     Click on "workgroup"
     The entry listed in "Windows workgroup"
     copy/paste into the entry on the XP box
     My advice is to use all lower case workgroup names
     MS does not properly respect UC/LC

After computing one of the choices will be
"I do not need to set up other computers" or something like that.

Then in IE
Tools->Internet Options->Connections->Lan Settings
Turn off "Automatically detect settings"
OK
OK
Exit IE
Restart IE
Tools->Internet Options->Connections->Lan Settings
Turn on "Automatically detect settings"
OK
OK
See if you can see yahoo now.
Turning off the on autodetect seems to clear out the bad connection so MS/IE re-establishes connection information.

Then go do the same to the other XP box.

Hope this works for you. It does for me.

hmm,
I didn't notice the ip, but before I was getting the ip's 10.0.0.1001 and 10.0.0.102 as I had set up the router to dish out these ip's....
OOPPPPSSS!!!!
I did the ipconfig while I had the internet directly plugged in to one of the pc's so I could check my email and reply to your posts...DUH!!! I'll have to re-post the ipconfig with the internet plugged into the sme box ..

Well I tried as Richard suggested making sure to follow every step and still no luck!  I even did it on both computers twice!
The odd thing is that I can ping whatever I want, and msn messenger even signs in, but I cant browse the internet!!!
What is going on???

I'm assuming you now have your sme supplying the ip addresses and not the router, what are your proxy settings on you browser? do you  have 3128 as your port? If you can ping you must be able to connect.  There is something very simple that is not set.

that all looks Ok to me, and if you are able to connect from the sme box and ping from the XP box......

You mentioned a router. Is that now bypassed (ie. you are using the sme instead), or is it still in the mix somehow? If it's still there is it passing through the appropriate DNS info to the sme box (can you use lynx from the sme box to look at any external site?)?

I assume that everything was working fine when directly connected (ie. it's not a problem with the ISP)?

Hi Jon,

In IE, do you actually have the 'Use Proxy Server for you LAN' check box ticked in Tools -> Internet Options -> Connections -> LAN Settings. Also with the correct address (looks like it should be Address: 10.0.0.1 Port: 8000). And check that under Advanced too...

I should of clarified this earlier, whoops. I'm not using a router, I'm using a 5 port swtich and sme to route.  It seems to be dishing out local ip's just fine. I dont have anything set up for proxy settings, but interestingly enough in LAN settings in IE, use automatic configuration script has the numbers 3128 in the space provided even though it's not checked, and when i do check it it makes no difference. Also, I tried fooling around with the proxy settings by doing the following: checking the box in IE LAN settings and specifying the address of 10.0.0.1 and the port of 3165 and i also tried 3128. Should I change the address to the ip sme assigns me, or do I want the host address? As of now, I have undone these settings so I can start from scratch if needed.
