How much does the commercial version cost?

How much does the commercial version cost?
« on: December 10, 2003, 04:00:37 AM »
I've tried contacting Mitel for an answer and they don't even acknowledge the email. If they are dropping the unsupported version and retaining the commercial version then I can't see them lasting long in business if they choose to ignore potential paying cuastomers.

Can anyone give me an idea how much the basic 6000 MAS software costs per year?

Nobody really knows except a select few Mitel resellers (whoever they might be).

SME/Mitel produces one of the best (actually THE BEST) server software.  If they put as much time into marketing as they do programing, they would sell tens of thousands of copies and service agreements.

Good luck finding an actual price.

It's sad that we can't find a price or get a response from Mitel. We just want to know what we would be up for with a Mitel solution. Businesses have budgets and ours is no different. At the current rate of frustration we'll end up buying a SUN box and to hell with Mitel.

Well, if those prices are accurate we'll certainly buy a SUN box. Over time, it would be a LOT cheaper.

I wonder .. this way of pricing with a annual fee, could it be due to the GNU licence terms ? Can you actualy sell a distribution based on open source ? But what about Suse and Lindows, they are selling the licenses, arent they ? Think I heard that Mac choosed FreeBSD and not Linux because of diffrent "rules and regulations" ???? Does any of you know more about this ?!

I've looked at the commercial version twice, here's about how it shook out for me:

Under the old E-smith (before Mitel acquired them), the price for the commercial version was quite reasonable, and even fairly affordable for small business users at around $500/year, IIRC.  I was about to pull the trigger on this when Mitel bought E-smith.  I waited about a year to determine that e-smith was really a going concern, then checked with Mitel about a supported version.

The price had roughly tripled - It was going to cost over $1500/year for supported SME, and even worse, I couldn't deal directly with Mitel, but had to go through a damn reseller, most of whom (sorry to say it) were either not all that competent, or had significant attitude problems.  My research showed that very few of them could be counted on to do anything but take your money and deliver the commercial SME server CDs.  (I'm sure there were exceptions, but I heard some real gripes from the handful of users I contacted.)

I really think Mitel shot themselves in the foot here w.r.t. both pricing and especially, the hands-off, you-must-deal-with-an-authorized-reseller stance.

I even considered becoming a reseller myself, but I didn't really want to resell it, just use it for a few clients that needed it - and most of my clients don't hire me to do that sort of thing - to be honest, I'm a very expensive sysadmin, and a multi-purpose server is more likely to be a peripheral need for a guy that specializes in new technology development.

As a result, niether Mitel nor E-smith ever got a dime from me, although I would have been more than willing, if they'd offered a reasonable deal.  Too bad, really.

This may give you a bit of an indication why you don’t se it around a lot. The thing about the reseller is very annoying. There are only two resellers where I live and nether of them had a clue when I asked them about it. But then it isn’t a very popular product in the grand scope of things. To become a reseller yourself you have to sell 75 000 Canadian a year worth of hardware or you loose your states as a reseller. You also have to pay 3000 for certification for each product you want to sell. You also have to buy a demo kit that can cost around 4000. So you have to have the money to invest to do it.

This is why many of us business owners are happy that it SME is going back to the community.

Hi Guys,

Mitel has poorly understood the correspondence with potential customers ....

However, in the product information bulletin you will at page 7 see all the pricing.
You can get the bulletin here:

Cheers

Kyzo (www.kyzo.com) in the UK offer a download version of their
server distros that times out after 30 days. It costs 100 GBP to reg.
I spoke to them the other day and they say they are developing
a smaller version that is aimed at the 'Home Tech' - should have
enough features for the enthuisiastic technician but not for
large companies who should be paying for their commercial
versions.

If they can get the balance right ie features v price and
the updates are free then it may be worth considering?

I found this link on google:

Don't know if it is still a valid reseller though.

Servers at www.kyzo.com are very nice appliances, but limited to only what are designed to do.
In contrary, SME, while can be used as appliance out the box (and many use it that way), can be customized and extended with functionality by hundreds generic applications, and services.

Everything has its own niche and target client’s base.
