SME 6 can't connect to internet
« on: December 20, 2003, 04:51:26 PM »
Hi, I am using SME 6.0 and is using Tele2ADSL in Denmark as ISP.

My problem is that I can't get the SME server to connect directly to my ISP. If I use a router (billion-643) does the connection work like a charm because the router has an connection option saying obtain IP automatically (without username etc).

I think that the problem is that my ISP does not require any user username, passwords etc. (according to their support are the using my fixed IP as identification).

Any suggestions on this issue?

Your connecting in transparent Bridge mode; setup the external interface on the SME box (the NIC connected to the ADSL modem) to use the fixed IP provided to you by your ISP.

Do this via the configuration option on the status screen on the SME box (login as admin if you have not set it to come up automatically)

Hi, thanks for the answer – but I think I need to rephrase my question.

My ISP validates the ADSL connection though the IP address and is not using username, password or other of the normal authentication procedures – according to their helpdesk

So I would like setup the SME 6.0 ADSL NIC to automatic obtain the connection info (IP’s etc) without using username, mac address etc.

Is it possible and eventually how?

Rene,

Do you have a standard Network Interface Card or do you have a PCI ADSL Modem installed for your external connection???

Do you have a static IP address or dynamic with your ISP?

Hi, I have a standard NIC (Network Interface Card) with a ADSL modem connected.

I have a static IP adress (but my ISP uses DCHP to assign it in the same way as if it was dynamic - according to their helpdesk).

Go to the server console (NOT the server manager) and pick #2 Configure this server.

Make sure you have selected either Server-Gateway OR Private Server-Gateway.
Make sure you have selected Server and Gateway-DEDICATED on the next screen.
Then in a few more screens choose #2 DHCP (send ethernet address as client identifier)

You will NOT need a username or password for this type of connection.  It will use the MAC address of your external NIC to identify the machine to the network and should always give you the same IP even if you shut your machine down or reboot unless you change your external NIC (in theory anyway).

Good Luck

Hi René,

What I suspect you also should do is report your mac address of the external nic to your provider so they will link your static IP to your NIC. Otherwise you may get a different IP when/if you get an outage. That is assuming this works similar to my isp.

Hi, I've think I've tried all combinationes of seeting up the internet connection as a dedicated SME server.

With PPOE, with mac adresse as client indentifier etc. etc. Is it possible to obtain the connection settings on the externat NIC (on the SME server) in the same say as if the server was a "client" but on the external NIC?

Hi René,

Try physically to connect the sme with a new (shorter) cable directly to your modem. Also make sure you have your modem (assuming it is a router/modem) in bridge mode.

Hope this works. For some reason I couldn't get an IP using a longer cabel. SME didn't work back then but windows did....? strange huh? Now sitting 2 meters away from the modem using a different cable it does.

Usefull command also is 'ifconfig' It shows you if your external nick gets an IP or not.

Let us know if it works and good luck!

Hi, I found the solution on the problem – it was a wrong subnet mask.

The method that worked was the static IP and then proper settings did I take from a winXP machine using the commandprompt command ipconfig/all.

And from this info could I see that my ISP actually was using another subnet mask than stated in the technical info!

Thanks for the inputs
