I experienced a configuration problem with an e-smith box (V5.5)in an attempt to connect ADSL with static IP address using 'alcatel speedtouch home' modem which acts as a bridge.
I don't have any problem with my previous ISP using 'pppoe' (dynamic IP). I decided to switch to the new ISP as it offers static IP. However, when switching to this new ISP, I was requested to reconfigure the ADSL modem to run in a bridge mode, I did so. As a result, I can connect a MS-XP box in, but not e-smith box....
a) There is no problem in configuring an ADSL MODEM for its BRIDGE mode, as I can successfully connect a Microsoft XP box with the same modem with the same setting into internet.
b) There shall be no faults in NICs as I used them prior to the ISP switch over.
c) In configuring the e-smith for internet connection, I chose 'Static IP address' instead of 'PPPOE', and I entered and checked the 'IP address, network mask, gateway IP address' setting and they are all correct.
d) After saving and activating the new configuration, reboot the machine, 'ifconfig -a', shows 'eth1' is down (eth1 connects to the ADSL Modem). No doubt, 'ping' shows that the network in any internet site is unreachalbe.
My questions:
a) Am I heading to wrong direction?
-- Any side effect remaining due to previous 'pppoe' configuration?
b) Why eth1 is not up? shall I try 'ifconfig eth1 x.x.x.x netmask y.y.y.y up' and add 'route -net default gw z.z.z.z eth1' manually?
c) From SME's admin interface, if static IP address mode is chosen, why won't we asked to enter primary and second DNS address? Do I need manually add them into /etc/resolv.conf.
I wonder if you can offer advice upon these issues. Many thanks.
regards,
Guo
