I have only had SME server for a couple of months and it's damn fine. Absolutely marvelous. To all those involved, thanks guys.

I have mod-ed my box, to provide me with audible alarms on certain events. E-mail arrival, time, disk space...
I dont want a server that I have to sit and watch!

It's relatively crude, but I'm wondering whether it's worth my while tidying it up and packaging it as a contrib.

Also after scouring this site and the web for an SME icon for my desktop, I created one. Yeah, I know, it's no biggie, but if any one wants it...

Hi

I don´t agree with your wish of have AUDIBLE alarms on SME but I think every single contribution deserves a documentation.
I think you should write a documentation even if it´s a HowTo only.

And YES I´d like to see your pictures!

OK, I'll consider you suggestion. Mind you... it still depends on how many responses I get.

The icon is available from http://www.the-outernet.com/sme-icon.ico

If I've got this url posting business correct... right click, save link ... should work.

Nick :-)

An audible alarm for low disk space or SMART or RAID error would be most excellent!

Any thoughts about using festival (text 2 speech) to generate the alarms?
Ref.: http://www.cstr.ed.ac.uk/projects/festival/

Would it be cool to come into the computer room and hear the server complaing about "!!ALARM!! Low amount of disk space is free!" ;-)

And how do you generate the alarms now, sound via the sound card or through the PC speaker?

And by the way if you look into the html source of contribs.org you will find the favicon (http://wiki.contribs.org/favicon.ico).

I would prefer something like "Danger Will Robinson - Disk space is low"

Let see if I understand you right. Do you recommend a addon that identifies the user in front of the SMEserver so the voice message could be customized to that particular user ? ;-)

That would be cool

But back to the original topic, did your posting reflect to the posting or was it just a "comment"?

Nah - None of the above. I just want it to sound like the Robot out of "Lost in space"

Hey cm'on, next you'll be wanting it to wake you up in the morning with live audio from your favourite webcast radio station and a hot cup of coffee! - Come to think of it...

With regard to the icon. Five minutes after the original posting, I was gazing at the browser url, thinking, how did they get that there?.
So now you have a choice, transparent background or white background.

I didn't know there was text to speech for linux. I'll have to check that out.

"Wake you up in the morning" why not, but I already have ten devices that can do that and for coffe, nah I prefer my espresso hand made ;-)

But to get voice messages on the gsm phone that actually can tell me where I should start troubleshooting or the CEO gets the revenue before coming to work, thats more usefull apps for TTS.

And festival can be compliled for the most OS so no limit to Linux.

A warning: I'm playing around with festival on a Toshiba laptop with a Intel 97 soundchip and I have trouble to get the sound to work properly, but generating wav's is no problems.
The festival webpage mention that cheap onboards sound chips could be the cause for my problems and they recommend to install a SoundBlaster 16 but I havn't found a SB 16 for PCMCIA ;-)

"nix" do you have a beta for download somewhere ?

No beta. At the mo, it's just a collection of shell scripts and e-smith mods. I wouldn't even call it alpha. ;-D
