can smeserver v65 be email gateway before exchange server?
« on: August 11, 2005, 07:12:37 PM »
Dear all,

Is it possible to setup smeserver v65 as an email gateway server before the exchange server?

Currently, we have an exchange email server installed, my question is that can we put the smeserver in front of the exchange server to filter up the spam and virus mails before it comes into the exchange server.

Please advise.

Thank you,
Daley

Yes. See "Delegate Mail Server" on the E-mail panel.

See the manual:

http://mirror.contribs.org/smeserver/contribs/bobk/SME_Manual/chpt-13.7.html#13.7.2

- Configure the domains you want to receive
- Configure the Exchange server as the "Delegate Mail server"
- The SME Server will accept and process, then forward to the delegate mail server.

Thank you very much, my existing email server is accessable by the public and sitting in the DNZ, we named it "mail.apcm.com".

In my case, how shd i changing my current setup? can my email server still accessable by the public? and what will be the new setup like?

do you have any network diagram for this matter?

Thank you very much.

Yes. This works out of the box in 7.0alpha, but additional packages are required for 6.x

As to the configuration question above:

- Configure the domains on the SME Server
- Configure the Exchange server as the Delegate Mail Server
- Configure the Exchange server to use the SME Server as the upstream mail host
- Test, test, test
- Change your MX records to point at the SME Server, or swap the IP addresses around (don't forget to swap the IPs in the configuration items above)
- The SME Server will be accessible publicy. The Exchange server no longer needs to be.

Nice.
Would be good for anyone who wants to add anti-spam and anti-virus to their existing mail system.

But I wonder whether hpw much will the speed and performance be affected.

If the exchange server is behind the smeserver now, Can we create webmail.apcm.com under the "hostname and addresses" for public access?

Does it also means that the smeserver will be able to performing the anti-spam and anti-virus at the gateway to filter the msg?

Please advise.

Only the cost of scanning on the server plus the cost of one more store+forward. I don't think that's much for SMTP.

I take it you mean webmail on the Exchange server? There are a couple of options:

- If you have a another IP, you could leave it visible for webmail
- You could use Port Forwarding
- You could use a ProxyPass

It's all possible, but getting beyond simple configuration.

Sorry, i dont undestand howto change the MX record to point to the smeserver, since the smeserver is the gateway to access internet, is it the change at the smeserver? where shd i modify it?

Question 2, do i need to move the current domain name to smeserver? so that everyone can find the domain name.

Thank you so much.
