powstatd UPS HOWTO revised
« on: March 19, 2003, 02:25:12 AM »
Dear All

An updated HOWTO for powstatd has been posted at
http://www.e-smith.org/docs/howto/contrib/powstatdUPSHOWTOv5.5v5.6.txt

The most significant change was correcting the config command to enable powstatd at reboot, but there is additional information about cables and some other minor changes.

Ray,

Will powstatd co-exist with NUT that is loaded when you install update2 on sme 5.6?

I have not "tested" the combination as such. By testing I mean explored any interaction issues.

I have powstad on a v5.6u2 server, but nut is disabled.

The e-smith configuration database has a "nut" entry for nut, and a "powstatd" entry for powstatd.
I would think it wise to NOT attempt to use both UPS software at the same time, but with powstatd enabled and nut disabled my server seems OK.

Worse case scenario would be to just uninstal the nut rpms, I think there are 2 of them
rpm -e nut
rpm -e nut-client

More info on nut at
http://www.exploits.org/nut

Nut may become the flavour of the day as it appears to be supporting newer hardware and in the words of Charlie Brady "provides much better support for smart UPSs". I have not looked at nut so cannot comment further about it.

On the other hand powstatd is configurable for just about any UPS with serial cable.

Hey Brad
I think you may need your eyes checked.
Why not read my last post where it quite clearly says

Ray,

I have installed U2 and I'm a bit fuzzy on this NUT thing.

It appears in my boot log that nut start successfully.  However, I am unclear on how to configure or test it.

Is the USB interface enabled by default?

Should I create a custom template if I need to make changes?

Is this an on-going, unfinished project?

Is someone working on a server manager panel for it?

It seems that it was just thrown into the update unfinished.  I have tried to help by offering my test server and several UPS's to help Shad (who has stated in earlier posts that he is working on a how to) but he has left my 2 or 3 attempts to help unanswered.  Is there any other way I can help with this?  I would really like to get the USB part of this working.

Thanks,
Paul

I have not used nut so I do not really know anything about it.

The nut web site mentioned earlier may be useful.
I have seen some comments from Shad Lords about nut but his work appears to be a "work in progress". I'm sure when he has solved the various issues he has discovered using nut with sme, he will publish his work.

By default nut appears to be disabled when sme starts up.
To enable it I assume one would do:
/sbin/e-smith/db configuration setprop nut status enabled
and sme should then start up with nut enabled.

As far as what settings to make, I don't know. The nut site may help.
You could try posting to the devinfo list if you wish to do some development work with nut, and those in the know may feel like contributing their thoughts or assistance.

Alternatively there are plenty of non USB UPS's around and apcupsd or powstatd will work OK for those with sme.

Just had a quick look at the nut site
Instal instructions here:
http://www.exploits.org/nut/docs/1.2.1/INSTALL.html

I guess you can skip the compiling part, as it already is installed on 5.6U2 as an rpm. Just work out the config files part of it etc etc. My guess would be to start at step 5 or 6 of the Build & instal section.

List of docs here:
http://www.exploits.org/nut/docs/

list offeatures here:
http://www.exploits.org/nut/features.html

Mailing list for further help here:
http://www.exploits.org/nut/lists.html

Hopefully that should be enough to get you going.
Good luck, and do let us know if you get somewhere with nut.

All the links here are dead. I've been looking for info on how to get NUT running.

How lazy are you ?

Browsing to
http://www.exploits.org/nut/
refers you to the new web site at
http://www.networkupstools.org/

Also search these forums on NUT as there have been many posts explaining how to use & configure it.
I'm sure there was a mini HOWTO.
Basically it does not need configuration, just plug in your USB UPS in & enable NUT with the command given earlier.
/sbin/e-smith/db configuration setprop nut status enabled

The powstatd howto can be now be found here as the e-smith site no longer exists:

How lazy are you ?

Is it really necessary to keep chastising people?  Some people search, a lot don't.  Asking someone how lazy are they doesn't help in trying to provide them an answer and doesn't really help anyone in the long run.  How about constructive criticism instead of the constant put-down criticism.  (i.e. a search of x here results in this here.)  Like you have done many other times in answering various inquiries.

Can't we all just try to get along.   :hammer:

That was a question, it certainly was not chastising anyone !

http://education.yahoo.com/reference/dictionary/entry/chastise
To punish, as by beating.
To criticize severely; rebuke.

> Some people search, a lot don't.

Then they should try to search first, or at least try to resolve the problem when it is quite simple to do so.
My answer pointed out how easy it was to find those "dead" links.

I disagree, it prompts them to look for themselves (as they could/should have done) and hopefully prompts other less experienced readers to also "look for themsleves".

>  How about constructive criticism......  (i.e. a search of x here results in this here.)

First of all there was no criticism, and secondly I did in fact give a reasonably long & good answer to the questions posed by the poster. Certainly my answer was much longer than the short "how lazy are you" question. I consider that a reasonably good balance as far as my helpfulness to others is concerned.

If you don't like my style, sorry.
