Install the rpm on your alpha14 box with
rpm -Uvh zsync*.rpm
then do man zsync to read about the usage.

rename the previous iso to smeserver-7.0alpha14.iso, then

Many thanks to all of you (Michael, Ray and mweinber), I got it sorted now with your help both ways (rsync and zsync).  May also be useful to others I hope.  Regards. chris

Upgrade from 6 to 7
« Reply #80 on: May 28, 2005, 02:39:47 AM »
H All,

Is it possible to upgrade from the current SME 6 to SME 7? Has anyone done this/ I am having problems even with a fresh install of SME 6 with no contribs or updates added.
I tried to upgrade to SME7 Alpha14 and got this message:
Kernel panic: No init found. Try passing init= option to kernel
I checked the bug list and found a reference to this problem (although not from 6 to 7) and followed the workaround but it was still the same. Meanwhile Alpha 15 was released so I downloaded that and started again, still the same. Any suggestions?

Regards,
Del

I did see a reference at Sourceforge (in the bugs ?)where someone tried that, I think they were succesful.

Perhaps you should post your sme 6 install problem in a new thread on these forums rather than in sme 7 development thread.

I just posted a fix for alpha15 at Sourceforge bugs, although it is the "same' bug as earlier reports as Charlie has explained, that recurs whenever the kernel is upgraded.
Follow the instructions CAREFULLY !

Hi Ray,

>Perhaps you should post your sme 6 install problem in a new thread on these forums rather than in sme 7 development thread.

You misunderstood, I have no problem installing SME6, I meant that I had performed a fresh install of SME6 and was having a problem upgrading it to SME7

>I just posted a fix for alpha15 at Sourceforge bugs, although it is the "same' bug as earlier reports as Charlie has explained, that recurs whenever the kernel is upgraded.

I did follow it CAREFULLY!  But I will try again and post the results here. Thanks for your help.

The instructions need to be modified slightly for alpha15. Don't run "lilo -v". And kernel version is different - 2.4.21-32.EL.

Hi Charlie,

This is what I am trying to do:

Boot from CDROM and type "text rescue".

Then:

chroot /mnt/sysimage
mkinit -v -f /boot/initrd-2.4.21-32.EL.img 2.4.21-32.EL
mkinit -v -f /boot/initrd-2.4.21-32.ELsmp.img 2.4.21-32.ELsmp

exit

Then reboot.

But after this:

mkinit -v -f /boot/initrd-2.4.21-32.EL.img 2.4.21-32.EL

I now get:

mkinit command not found

Any ideas what I am doing wrong?
Thanks for your time.

Hi Ray,
Thanks for the reply, unfortunatley it is still stopping at the same error.
This what I did:

Boot from CDROM and type "text rescue".

Then:

chroot /mnt/sysimage
mkinitrd -v -f /boot/initrd-2.4.21-32.EL.img 2.4.21-32.EL
mkinitrd -v -f /boot/initrd-2.4.21-32.ELsmp.img 2.4.21-32.ELsmp

exit

Then reboot.
I think I will download Alpha 16 and see if that is any different.

Del
