1) I noticed that the spamassassin config doesn't include the ability to add whitelists or blacklists. As knuddi's
contribution did. Will that be part of the eventual config?

We merged in various pieces of work when we built the e-smith-spamassassin for 7.0. We didn't pick up all of existing work - some intentionally and some by omission. The ability to set white/blacklists is available under the covers, but I'm not totally happy with the database format, so I'd rather not expose (and commit to) it yet and have conversion pain.

Anyway, I'll talk with Knuddi to see what we can do.

Be aware that whitelists are like leaving a key under the mat.

2) I've run a few firewall scans and even with all the various services turned off I'm still getting the following open ports: Ident (113), and URD (465). I know ident can be a pain to block.

465 is smtps - SMTP over SSL. It's on by default, just like unencrypted SMTP. SMTP AUTH is also available there. We don't provide SMTP AUTH over port 25 as it's not secure - revealing usernames and passwords to sniffers.

We could support CRAM-MD5, but that means we also need to store an unencrypted version of the password - and we don't want to do that.

Ident isn't difficult to block, but doing so will delay some mail significantly. I'm not sure if it's still true, but there were sites which wouldn't talk SMTP with you unless you responded to ident. This is quite silly, as I can pretend to be anyone you want me to be over ident.

Upgrading from alpha21 to alpha22 yields unexpected results. Best to do a fresh install if you wish to test the many fixes implemented in this new release. It loads very fast, so not a problem really.  chris.

Yep - Alpha to Alpha upgrades are often tricky, and so we don't care about them. Getting them right would slow development significantly.

If you have an Alpha to Alpha upgrade issue, please log it. But please be prepared for it not to be fixed. That's what Alphas are for.

What matters more are 6.0->7.0Alpha, 6.0.1->7.0Alpha and 6.5->7.0Alpha. These issues need to be fixed or at least understood before we get to Beta.

P.S. Anyone feel like being "upgrade test bunny" for each of these release? I.e. install 6.x to a known state, upgrade to the latest Alpha, record results. Raise bugs where appropriate. Lather, rinse, repeat for next Alpha. Compare results between upgrades and note new or fixed bugs. This is best done under VMware - save the pre-upgrade state as a snapshot.

gordonr,
Thanks for the reply.

I didn't realize that 465 was SMTPS. I'd never run into the port before and all the searches I did only came up with URD, weird.

Are there any inclinations as to how close we are to a beta?

Usual quote: "When it's ready"

The Alpha is looking good, but we still have quite a few bugs  which need a bit of investigation in the bug list. We made a fairly radical change going from CentOS3 to CentOS4, and that needs a few Alphas to shake down.

We also haven't had enough testing of 6.0/6.0.1/6.5 upgrades - hence the call for volunteers to help there.

Yeah, I saw some pretty big changes in the RPMS just recently, so I can imagine lots of new fun bugs have popped up.

I'll have to download the latest and install a few contribs. Before I do, is a new alpha coming out??

The only reason I ask is because I downloaded A20, and an hour after i got it installed and working I saw that A21 was out with all the big changes. So, i didn't bother bug testing on A20.

No promises, but we hope to have another one later this week. However, if you use zsync or rsync on the image, you won't find it a large incremental download. You'll save your time and bandwidth and mirror bandwidth.

Damn, you guys are moving too quickly:).

I finally got a chance to sit down and have a go with Alpah 21, and now there is alpha 22.  Thats after originally downloading alpha 20...:P

Will test 22 out as a fresh install tomorrow...

EDIT:  Actually, with Planet Mirror giving me 470kb/s, looks like i'll be testing it in about 15 minutes :D.

[Smeserver-developer] 7.0alpha23 is on its way to the mirror
« Reply #158 on: July 02, 2005, 12:25:58 PM »
It should appear here, and other mirrors, in a few hours:

http://mirror.contribs.org/smeserver/releases/7.0alpha/iso

There is now a Changelog in the top-level directory of the ISO. It doesn't list individual package updates, just adds and deletes.

7.0alpha22 -> 7.0alpha23

- Removed webalizer
- Added rkhunter
- Added i586 packages - openssl, kernel, glibc
- Added smeserver-yum
- Added smeserver-qpsmtpd-tnef2mime-0.0.2-0.noarch.rpm and dependencies:
        perl-Convert-TNEF-0.17-3.1.el3.rf.noarch.rpm
        perl-File-MMagic-1.21-1.noarch.rpm
        perl-IO-stringy-2.108-4.rhel3.dag.noarch.rpm
        perl-MIME-tools-5.411-2.rhel3.dag.noarch.rpm
- Added centos-release and made e-smith-release depend on it
- Removed centos-yumconf
- Imported cdrom.image into CVS

Thanks for all the testing. Please update the bug tracker if things are fixed or otherwise.

Thanks,

Gordon, Shad, Charlie, and everyone else who has contributed

Ahhh. another one:).

Oh well, good timing, my media, or download must have been faulty for A22 as it didn't install properly.

I couldn't even run linux rescue...

Will give 23 a shot when it appears.

EDIT:  btw. where can I find an overview of changes between Alpha releases?  This document doesn't mention anything about it changing from Centos 3 to 4 between A21 and A22:

Sounds like a bad CD. Run "mediacheck" from the boot: prompt.

Best bet is to subscribe to the smeserver-developer list:

We'll try to keep the CD Changelog up-to-date from now on.

Does anyobdy know why the alpha 23 iso is only 21MB on the mirrors? I downloaded and tried it incase the devs had decided to go over to a network install but I got a boot disc error.

Anybody even got a23 working?

SME Server 7.0alpha23 has not been fully mirrored yet to _any_ of the mirrors.

Let's see how the mirrors pick up, after the events (storm) in the region where the contribs.org server is located.

Alpha23 now on ibiblio

The storm might have started the issue but ibiblio (and other mirrors) were actually the cause.  They had multiple copies of rsync running that were stomping on each other.  I've fixed the issue and made the sync script a little more resilient.

I also just finished babysitting the ibiblio sync to make sure it finished and is complete with a23.  Feel free to pull it from there now.  Other mirrors that pull from ibiblio should update within a few hours.
