Mail client and SMTP outgoing server
« on: January 13, 2007, 01:36:18 AM »
Hi
Let me rephrase this
Regarding my SME server settings for my email client.
typically a mail client outgoing server is setup like smtp.mail.comcast or something to that effect
What about the SME server what is the proper settings for the email system?
smtp.mydomain.com or something?
But when I do that it does not  send mail with my client. So I have to resort back to smtp.comcast.net

FYI webmail is fine, and I know or believe that all my DNS records are correctly setup.

Any pointers for my smtp outgoing mail setting on my client (thunderbird) ?

Thanks
Steve

The simple alias "mail" is sufficient if you are using the SME Server as your DNS server.

Thanks
And Yes SME is resolving DNS locally for all domains and subdomains that I've setup.

My domain name for the primary ibay is www.foolishlys.com

I assumed I could set my outgoing smtp server in my email client as something like smtp.foolishlys.com but I get errors that it's not configured correctly ?

I tried to tweak the ports for the smtp on the email client but all the same result. Port 25 appears to be the default when setting up the client email outgoing smtp mail server.

Perhaps there is something I'm missing , but again the webmail is working.

Anyhow thanks for the response I look forward to getting this resolved

Hi,
you should look at some "nslookup mail" and "nslookup mail.yourdomaine.tld" command responses from your workstations.
Should this returns any of the "70.91.x.x" or "216.252.y.y" then you are wrong in your DNS settings on the workstations (sould use the SME server as DNS) or in your SME configuration.

Yes I'm getting 70.xx.xx.xx when doing a nslookup at:
http://www.mtgsy.net/dns/utilities.php

DNS setting on the workstations ???

I get this type of thing for testing at mtgsy.net for email address checking:

Getting MX records for 'foolishlys.com'

There are 01 MX records (Mail servers) for the domain 'foolishlys.com'

Testing each mail server in the list using the address icl@foolishlys.com
.foolishlys.com, preference = 20
Checking to see if .foolishlys.com is in any of the popular RBL's
PASSED - Not found in any RBL's
connecting to .foolishlys.com
*CONNECTION FAILED*
EHLO MTGSY.NET
MAIL FROM:<postmaster@mtgsy.net>
RCPT TO:<icl@foolishlys.com>
QUIT

I don't understand this cause the webmail works fine

Thanks for the help I'll look forward to any other information on this subject

Look in server-manager under Review configuration. It will tell you what to use for mail.

Go to Hostnames and addresses and make sure what the above tells you does exist.

What mode is your sme in ?

You could try just using the ip address as your mail server during testing.

William

Hi thanks

I'm using as gateway/server mode

I believe I found something about my settings

the smtp setting of the client I've set as foolishlys.com instead of smtp.foolishlys.com like I would normally do for outgoing smtp server.
It appears to be sending mail now.

Why would the smtp.foolishlys.com cause the mail to error ? and not foolishlys.com

I was reading the forums about something to do with proxies and things I don't know anything about it sadly.

Anyhow thanks for all the help and I would like to know what is the difference in the 2 entries.

Well smtp.foolishlys.com includes one of your subdomais and foolishlys.com is your domain. smtp.foolishlys.com would work if you'd set this subdomain to point to your server.
"It should just work" if it doesn't report it. Thanks!

Thanks

Well I've set my A records are set to foward to another website and the destination is a Yahoo IP address, but the C record I've set to *.iclbiz.com and mail.iclbiz.com which is a yahoo hostname since this is one of my subdomains on the SME box
And the MX record is set to iclbiz.com
And the mail works this way, but the webage that yahoo is suppose to forward me to does not
If I change the SME settings to use internet DNS then yahoo will forward to my website, but the mail will not ? LOL

In anycase I'm not sure if this has anything to do with the smtp. issue, but to confirm my DNS for the subdomain I believe has all proper A,C and MX records

But this may not have anything to do with the smtp issue because the www.foolishlys.com DNS is set to us my static IP address not yahoo, and also the mail is set correctly and the MX record of course is foolishlys.com
I'm not sure why myclient would not allow the smtp. for any of my domains including the primary domain.

Any other pointers on this would be great.

I realize this topics really splits into a few different topics but anyhow my review configuration in SME shows mail as firstname.lastname@foolishlys.com

But my SME should resolve and sort the mail which it is even of the subdomains. But still I don't understand why smtp will not work to send mail.

Perhaps I need to get more understanding of what smtp does and if it's important ?

Thanks

Nobody has asked, are you trying to send from the LAN or the WAN side?  LAN side you can use port 25, with no authentication.  WAN side you must allow SSTMP in the server-manager.  Once that is done set your client to use authentication and port 465.  If you are a roaming user (LAN and WAN) you can use authentication and port 465 all the time if you wish.

Interesting topic

I've not known about setting any ports for Lan or Wan I typically have not done that with any other email service ever.

But yes I am a roaming client sometimes from LAN and sometimes WAN from work

So to confirm I should set TLS authentication and port 465 on the clien for outgoing mail server and server name= smtp.foolishly.com on the client computers ?

What is difference in the settings as oppose to server name = foolishlys.com on port 25, and setting TLS (if available) ?

or smtp.foolishlys.com on port 465 and TLS (if available ?

Then use Secure SMTP (SSMTP).  SSMTp forces you to authenticate when you use the SMTP server, it allows you to send from external of the server.  Otherwise you'll need to use some other SMTp server to send (your ISP for example).

ssmtp is enabled on the server by default ? and I've reviewed the setting to be sure and confirm enabled

So is this why I was having some trouble sending email from the LAN when setting the outgoing server to smtp.foolishlys.com ?

I've set to smtp.foolishlys.com and TLS (if available) and port 465
Error message say   smtp. sever may not be configured properly or something to that effect

And Thanks for the help.

Don't quote me on this but do you need a C record of smtp.foolishlys.com to send mail from the WAN ?

Also, in server-manager, Hostnames and addresses do you need smtp.foolishlys.com set to location self to send mail from the LAN ? (assuming SME is providing IP's to your local computers )

In addition..
Server-manager, E-mail

POP3 server access    Allow private and public (secure POP3S)
IMAP server access    Allow private and public (secure IMAPS)

SMTP authentication    Allow SSMTP (secure)

Then in your email client, use

POP3 - SSL - Port 995
or
IMAP - SSL - Port 993
and
SMTP - SSL - Port 465 Authenticate password/username

DNS records are set
« Reply #14 on: January 17, 2007, 03:27:12 AM »
Thanks

I do have all the DNS records setup including the C and MX records etc.

I'm not sure I really understand all the reasons for the ports or why I can't just set the client to smtp.????.com or whatever as with any other email service ?

I may have to do some more reading on this subject but it's getting a little tiring, and time consuming.

Sorry to sound discouraged but I was really hoping for a simple solution for something that should be a simple subject but it's turning out a bit more then I can comprehend I'm embarrassed to say.

Thanks for all the help I'll tinker with it some more this weekend.
